CONCERNS have been raised about pedestrian safety on the A46 leading into Nailsworth.

Earlier this year, Gloucestershire Highways launched a road safety scheme, which will see resurfacing and traffic calming on the stretch between Inchbrook Trading Estate and Tipputts End.

Original plans listed improvements to existing road markings and signs and the provision of a pedestrian crossing point close to Renishaw which would reduce the crossing distance.

But this so-called pedestrian 'build out' has since been dropped - a decision the town council is not happy about.

Nailsworth mayor Steve Robinson said: "We are not going to sit back and do nothing. We need to do something about reinstating the crossing into the plans.

"There are bus stops on both sides of the road and a lot of people have to cross over to catch the bus."

Nigel Brown, estate manager at the nearby Dunkirk Mills, added: "Children and the elderly are unable to cross this busy main road in safety, due to speeding vehicles.

"It can take several minutes for a chance to cross safely to arise. Several elderly residents of the mill have come close to being run down."

Richard Gray, local highways manager at GCC, said: "In the past three years there hasn't been a single report of an accident involving a pedestrian on this stretch of road.

"The scheme we have consulted on is aimed only at improving driver behaviour.

"We will, however, assess the need for improvements to be made to pedestrian safety if it is something people are calling for."

Mr Robinson said the town council will be launching a petition, which will be used to encourage their county councillor Stan Waddington to use some of the £10,000 which GCC members have been allocated to tackle highway problems on this scheme.
