SUPERMARKET workers who saved a customer's life when he suffered a heart attack in store have been given an award by Nailsworth Rotary Club.

Laurie Merchant, 21, of Horsley and Beth Thomas, 24, of Forest Green, used their first aid skills when a man collapsed in Morrisons in June.

They were presented with community service awards on Thursday, August 16, at a special event.

Former Thomas Keble and Rednock School pupil Laurie said: "When we were invited to the event we didn't know what we were going for.

"It was nice to be recognised. It really did mean a lot to both of us."

The Nailsworth store had just opened when the man collapsed in the fruit and vegetable aisle.

Beth and Laurie took turns to administer CPR while other staff cleared the car park in readiness for the arrival of the Great Western Air Ambulance.

The man was taken to Bristol Royal Infirmary but died two weeks later.

Laurie said: "The important thing is that we gave him a couple more weeks with his family. It meant a lot to us that he was able to say what he wanted to say to them."

Rotary Club President Frank King said: "These two young people are a credit to their employers and to the local community."
