Burgers back on menu

FAST food giant McDonald's is preparing to launch a second bid for a restaurant in Stroud, the News & Journal can reveal.

It confirmed land at Merrywalks is under consideration but refused to be drawn on another site it is discussing with Stroud District Council.

McDonald's could overcome access problems which defeated proposals last year if a temporary bus station is built nearby.

If plans for a cinema at the bus station get the green light, a pedestrian walkway could link Merrywalks to the town centre.

"That Merrywalks may well be back on the cards," said Rob Barker, McDonald's spokesman. "We are having some preliminary discussions with planners but it's got no further than that."
