Fotballing bin tackled

WITH England's historic victory over Germany still fresh in the minds of sports fans there can be few who believe our footballers are rubbish.

Yet an unusual player has bin seen on the newly-marked out pitch in Uplands playing fields.

Sporting Stroud's black and gold strip the new signing - a dustbin - was spotted by resident Chas Townley.

"Presumably it's a mistake," said Mr Townley. "Unless the bin's a better goalie than the Germans."

But by the time the News & Journal's photographer got to the scene the problem had already been tackled.

"It's a nonsense," said Sue Cresswick, clerk for Stroud Town Council.

"There's no way our staff would mark out a pitch with a bin in the middle."

It seems the bin was dumped on the pitch by the hooligan element.

"Somebody's rolled it in there," said the clerk.

"All the way from the car park at the end of the allotments."
