Flag flies to mark merchant seamen

THE Red Ensign fluttered over Stroud's Subscription Rooms on Monday to mark the part the merchant navy have played in conflicts on the high seas.

Only last year did merchant sailors win official recognition for their role in both world wars and more recent conflicts such as the Falklands war.

"September 3 is now an international memorial day, a day for merchant seamen," said Stroud's John Wheeler, himself a former sailor.

"This is the second time we've had it flying here.

"It was on the Mill last year and now it should be flying on the Sub Rooms every year."
