A TORRENT of sewage which gushes from manhole covers across a busy footpath has left residents fuming at the filthy mess left behind.
Faeces up to 9in high have been seen spewing out of gaps between two manhole covers and the path between Tesco and Cainscross Road, Stroud.
In the latest incident a stretch of the path was impassable except in wellington boots, because it was completely submerged by sewage.
The mess ran down the bank of the Painswick Stream, which leads in to the River Frome.
And on the banks of the stream, tomatoes have sprouted up - the seeds are one of the few things which pass through a human gut undigested.
Bob Farmiloe's home at Gannicox Road backs on to the path. He told the News & Journal how after the last episode, he traipsed through several inches of filthy water which was littered with condoms and sanitary towels.
"When I got to Tesco I stamped my feet on the ground and the manager said he would push me round in a chair," said Mr Farmiloe, who has lived there for more than 40 years.
"It seems to have got worse over the past two years. It only does it when it rains heavily.
"When it last happened Tesco cleaners were trying to shovel it off the path - it's literally raw sewage."
