Tributes to councillor

A BRITISH Legion colleague carried the standard this week at a moving funeral ceremony for Stonehouse councillor, Norman Kimber.

An ardent campaigner for pensioner's rights, Mr Kimber, 83, died peacefully at Gloucester Royal Hospital.

Chairman of Stonehouse Town Council, Mattie Ross that he would be greatly missed.

"We were very, very sad," said Cllr Ross.

"He was a lovely man, a loyal, conscientious member of the council.

"He did a lot in the community and was chairman of the Stonehouse Community Centre.

"The famous thing about Norman was his battle to get Norman's Seat.

"He campaigned for a seat on his way home because it was a long walk and fairly steep."

"He thought a seat there would be a good idea."

The bench was eventually installed in Queen's Road near the station, on a bit of a hill.

The council will now put a plaque on the bench in memory of Mr Kimber.

It will simply read, Norman's Bench.
