Complete Music Challenge Cup Fairford Town 2, Shortwood United 0 FOLLOWING a fine midweek performance at Almondsbury that saw Shortwood move into fourth place in the Hellenic League, their poor away form in cup competitions continued with defeat at Fairford.
Shortwood were on the back foot for most of the first half with the front two of Steve Walker and Rich Evans receiving little support.
Fairford created many chances but were unable to convert any of them and with half-time approaching Shortwood goalkeeper Martin Pearce made a fine point blank save from Courtney Chessell to keep the game all square at the break.
However, two minutes after the restart Fairford did take the lead when a long range effort was deflected by Shortwood captain Lee Driver-Dickerson past the wrong-footed Pearce.
Fairford continued to dominate with Shortwood giving the home defence few problems.
Fairford could have extended their lead on several occasions but a combination of poor finishing and good goalkeeping from Martin Pearce kept the deficit to a single goal until the 90th minute when Lee Stoddart beat an offside trap and rounded Pearce to make Shortwood's miserable day complete.
Star man - Martin Pearce.
