Fireworks go off with a bang

EBLEY Fireworks went off with a bang on Monday night, shaking Stroud with a magnificent display in pyrotechnics.

The huge explosions could be heard from miles around and crowds flocked to the Marling playing fields to enjoy the spectacle close up.

"It was a superb evening," said the firework committee's Steve Taylor.

"The weather was good, the crowds were well behaved and everything went off on time. I think that's all we could have asked for."

Organisers believe around 11,000 people turned up to watch the fireworks - which means funds are likely to be up on last year.

"That means we'll have more money to give away to good causes," said Steve.

Pupils from Cashes Green School watched with pride as their prize guy Dumbledore the Wizard took pride of place on the pyre.

He was duly burned to a crisp, flanked by the runners-up from the Build a Guy competition which was held throughout the county's primary schools recently.

"I think everybody we spoke to thought it was a great night," said Steve.

"The wind wasn't too bad and it's that, rather than rain, that could have force us to call it off.

He added with a laugh: I think we had all said a few prayers that morning."
