Horror of upturned nails in goalmouth

A YOUNG footballer had a lucky escape after sick-minded yobs deliberately hammered upturned nails in to a grassy goalmouth.

The nails were discovered after Christos Kyriacou fell and cut himself on Sunday during the Cashes Green versus Slimbridge match at Elm Road.

The match was called off with 22 minutes to go and police were called in to investigate.

Nearly 30 3in nails were discovered hidden in the longer tufts of grass.

"It's horrific and absolutely insane," said John Wright, chairman of the playing fields' association.

"I'm so gutted about what has happened. It could have killed a small child."
