STROUD women who had marched on London to voice their objection to the war received a hero's welcome on their return home on Monday night.
Carol Kambites and Grace Trevett had walked to the capital to present the Prime Minister with a giant postcard calling for an end to the bombing.
When they got back they were met on the Subscription Rooms forecourt by dozens of well-wishers and the Stroud School of Samba.
Stroud's Green mayor John Marjoram told the women how proud the town was of them.
"You've got to have guts to fight in the peace movement," he said.
"You'll be remembered in the annals of Stroud history for what you've done." The peace walkers told the News & Journal how they had met anti-war MPs at Westminster and handed over the card to a policeman on the doorstep of 10 Downing Street. "We asked him if the Prime Minister would see it and he assured us he would," said Ms Kambites.
