A right royal surprise

A STROUD man has been awarded a landmark MBE for his services to the Vehicle Inspectorate.

The honour, thought to be the first MBE presented for work in this field, was conferred on Alan Long of Langtoft Road in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace last Friday.

HRH Price Charles presented the proud Mr Long with his medal and certificate.

"I didn't know anything about it until I received a letter from Downing Street saying I'd been nominated and asking if I'd be prepared to accept the MBE," said Mr Long.
