A STROUD pub is the first in the county to start dealing in the new European currency.
As of Wednesday, January 2, when drinkers and diners settle up at the Old Fleece at Rooksmoor, they will be able to hand over either currency and receive their change in either currency.
The pub and restaurant is believed to be the first pub in Gloucestershire to accept Euros, joining the ranks of high street big hitters such as Marks & Spencer, Bhs and Debenhams who are all geared up for the controversial new currency.
Most European Union member states will be joining the Euro this month and Europe Minister Peter Hain's call for traders to accept the new cash has led to accusations that the Government is trying to introduce the Euro in the UK by the back door.
Old Fleece owner Nick Beardsley and his French business partner Christophe Coquoin see this as an opportunity to update their tills and stay one step ahead of the opposition.
