AUSTRALIAN celebrity broadcaster and writer Clive James thrilled the crowds at Stroud's Subscription Rooms on Saturday with a last minute guest appearance.
More than 1,000 people in the prime of their life packed into the Sub Rooms during the day to see what was on offer during a Surprise Yourself event organised by BBC Radio Gloucestershire.
Clive James, who was appearing that evening at Cheltenham's Everyman with singer/songwriter Pete Atkin, dropped in on Stroud for a quick tour of the event and an interview with Radio Gloucestershire's breakfast show presenter Vernon Harwood.
Despite his many successful years on television with his own show, Mr James made it plain that he was no longer enamoured with the medium, preferring these days to reach his audience through a website on the internet and live appearances.
He was able to reveal, however, Margarita Krakatan, the worst singer on television, was alive and well and still enthralling audiences the world over.
Other attractions at the event designed to encourage middle-aged people to learn fresh skills included chances to drive a remote controlled tank, learn kick boxing and even to take ironing lessons.
