Drug case tourist is named by Japanese

THE STROUD tourist detained in Japan on drug smuggling charges has been named by Japanese customs as Nicholas John Baker.

Mr Baker, 31, a construction worker, was arrested on April 13 at Narita airport, near Tokyo, customs officer Kazutoshi Takahashi confirmed this week.

He had arrived in Japan after taking a flight from London. Mr Baker is accused of smuggling ecstasy and cocaine worth nearly £1.5 million.

Foreign Office spokesman Adrian Ient said the man arrested on April 13 had asked not to be named.

However, he said the individual was visited by consular officials on April 15 and 16. "We expect him to be indicted shortly and moved to a detention centre to await trial," said Mr Ient.

The maximum penalty for drugs trafficking in Japan is seven years, he added.
