DRINKING alcohol on the streets of Stroud is now illegal.
A new bye-law which became effective on Monday gives police the powers to prosecute anyone caught drinking in a public place.
Stroud District Council and Stroud Police have acted together to introduce the new order which which is aimed at wiping out 'yob culture' in the area.
Anyone caught now faces criminal prosecution and a fine of up to £500. The ruling does not apply to those pubs and cafes whose licence includes part of the pavement.
There will now be a two-week "honeymoon" period to give people a chance to adjust to the new order.
Inspector Mac McGarry, of Stroud Police, said: "We are only too pleased to play our part in this Crime and Disorder partnership initiative. This is all part of the drive to make Stroud a safer and more pleasant place for everyone."
"This is not about punishing people for having a drink," he added, "but there is a clear link between alcohol and anti-social behaviour."
Signs have been erected on the edges of the area covered by the order; smaller reminder signs have been placed around the town centre.
