Sam is a handsome mutt

A LOVEABLE mongrel who ended up in a dog's home as a puppy was given a second chance - and proved that pedigree isn't everything when it comes to winning show awards.

Sam, from Bisley, a lurcher-type dog aged about four, was named best rescue and second most handsome dog at the London heat of Scrufts - the cross breeds version of Crufts.

Owner Jane Beresford said: "Sam is a hero. He is sweet natured and very obedient. All my other dogs have been pedigrees - but he is the nicest dog I've ever had."

Sam was rescued from Bath Dogs Home three years ago. He is looked after by dog sitter Cathy Madden because Jane, a journalist, often travels abroad for work.

On September 11, she was making a BBC programme in New York and was standing under the twin towers as they were hit.

"My first thoughts were of Sam," she said, "and who would look after him if something happened to me."

Sam was taken to Scrufts by Cathy's 13-year-old son Eugene and will compete in the grand final in November.

Anyone who would like to give a home to a dog like Sam, said Jane, should get in touch with their local dogs home.
