Fraser plays a record breaking round at Minch Golf Club

YOUNG Australian amateur Marcus Fraser blazed a record-breaking trail on the road to Muirfield in the Open Golf south-west regional qualifier at Minchinhampton Golf Club on Monday July 8.

On the club's re-designed Cherington course, the 23-year-old from Melbourne shot a five-under-par 66 to take top spot among the eight qualifying places.

Fraser is also the reigning New Zealand amateur champion.

One shot behind him, with a new professional record was John Peters, from the St Mary's club in Pencoed.

The players will now join the other regional qualifiers in the final qualifying rounds in Scotland on Sunday and Monday bidding for a chance to line up against the world's superstars in The Open Championship that starts on Thursday July 18.

Results for the south-west region Open qualifiers played at Minchinhampton were as follows: 66 - Marcus Fraser (am), Australia; 67- John Peters, St Mary's; 68 - Barry Austin, Teign Valley; 69 - Chris Phillips, unattached; Richard Dinsdale, Newport; John Blackburn, Mendip Spring; 70 - Ryan Crowley, Henbury; Christopher Ledan, France. Reserves: John Morgan, Clevedon; Martin Simpson, Ashburnham; Tony Nash, Loswithiel; Scott Davidson, Bristol; Steve Surrey (am), Cumberwell Park; Stuart Clarke (am), Whitchurch; Simon McCarthy, unattached; Adam Frayne, St Mellion.
