FORMER Maidenhill School pupil David Smith, 34, has been given a free transfer from Grimsby Town and has signed for Nationwide League Division Three outfit Swansea City.
The experienced left sided defender and midfielder has signed a 12 month deal at The Vetch Field.
Smith made more than 150 appearances in the First Division (later the Premiership) for his first club Coventry City.
And he impressed so much that he made ten appearances for the England under-21 side. In this side he played alongside midfield hardman Paul Ince and goalkeeper Tim Flowers.
When he signed for Birmingham City he was swapped in exchange for David Rennie and the deal was valued at £500,000.
He has played all his club career in the two top English leagues before joined the South Wales side.
His club list includes Coventry, Bournemouth, Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion and Grimsby Town (who paid a fee of £200,000).
Smith grew up in Cashes Green and his parents still live there.
