A SWORDSMAN from Stroud fought his way to equal third place at the recent Bristol Open Men's Sabre.
Kevin Nelson, who lives in Slad, is a member of the Cotswold Fencing Club and he took part in the big event that was held at the Whitchurch Sports centre in September.
There were a total of 116 sabreurs of all abilities taking part in the Open. After the first round, which gave each fighter six fights, Nelson (pictured left) was seeded into the plate competition.
He then fought in three more rounds and victories in these gave him a spot in the semi-finals of the event.
However, despite an evenly fought contest, Nelson was finally beaten 12-15 by his opponent.
This result gave him an equal third place finish in the Bristol Plate competition.
Kevin has been fencing for more than 12 years at the Cotswold Fencing Club which is based in Cheltenham and he trains on Wednesday nights.
He said: "The Cotswold club is a very friendly small relaxed club.
"The Bristol Open was only my second competition. I have been fencing for 12 years but I use fencing as way to keep me fit and get me out of the house!"
