Peace band shout it loud

UP-AND-COMING Bristol band Babyhead, described as the best unsigned band in the country, are to play Stroud this weekend.

The band play a brassed-up mix of Ska and Hip-Hop which is tinged with an energy and humour that has led to comparisons with Ian Dury and The Specials.

"We play that music because it's most fun to play," said band member Tom. "We're a showbiz band!"

Showbiz band or not, Babyhead are certainly an active band. Not only did they wow the jazz stage at this year's Glastonbury but they've played numerous benefit shows for the likes of Greenpeace and the anti-Macdonald's campaign and toured the country.

"We're going to do a Stop the War show soon," said Tom.

"I went to the march last weekend and there were thousands of people there and all I saw on the front page the next day was an advert selling nasal spray to increase your sex drive."

The band has been going for seven years, but despite the best unsigned band tag, they've never pursued a record contract.

"It's not a priority," said Tom. "If someone were to offer us a sound and ethical contract, though, we might consider it."

The show takes place at The Space, Lansdown on Saturday, October 5 from 7.30pm. Babyhead are supported by local favourites True Lyrical Movement plus Bristol Old Skool Hip-Hop DJ Ragman and Stroud-based reggae purveyor DJ Rawkus.

The concert is a fundraiser for the Catalyst Housing Co-operative. Tickets are available in advance from Kane's or Trading Post or on the door on the night.
