Thousands expected to see illuminated tree trail

THE illuminated trail at Westonbirt Arboretum is now open and more than 30,000 visitors are expected between now and Christmas.

"We call it the Enchanted Wood," said event organiser Matthew Haynes, "and it really is enchanting.

"The magnificent old trees which Westonbirt contains look absolutely stunning when lit up; they really are living sculpture."

Putting on the illuminated walk involves more than 22 miles of cables, 1,500 theatre-style spotlights and seven powerful yet super-quiet generators.

This year, to add to the spectacle, two eight-feet-tall willow angels will be positioned along the trail.

These have been designed by Serena de la Hey, who created the giant Willow Man which is positioned alongside the M5 motorway near Taunton.
