PROTESTERS turned out in force to campaign against McDonald's in Stroud on Saturday.
Some 50 protesters gathered in Merrywalks to show their disappointment that the burger giant has begun building in the town.
Bearing placards with slogans such as 'Hit the road Mac' and calling on Stroud shoppers to choose local produce instead of support the multinational, the campaigners launched a peaceful protest.
"We believe passionately in freedom of choice," said protester Steve Penny. "A good choice is an informed choice, which takes others into consideration.
"We will be intensively lobbying all McDonald's potential customers over the coming months including the people of the town, car drivers and local schools.
"We believe that once given the facts people will turn their backs on Big Mac, as has been happening all over the world."
Mr Penny went on to say the protesters planned to organise open, democratic debates to give those who supported McDonald's the chance to put across their views.
A spokesman from McDonald's told the News & Journal the company respected the right of individuals to protest peacefully.
"We're always happy to answer any issues anyone raises but we beg to differ on this one," she said.
"McDonald's is still a growing business and we'll open 20 more restaurants this year and have another 20 planned for next year. "None are being closed in this country."
