High-energy mix from Brixton band

MULTI-RACIAL Brixton-based nine-piece band Maroon Town are all set to play a high-energy cocktail of ska, breakbeat, dub, techno and rap at the Subscription Rooms this week.

Maroon Town are named after a remote upland community in Jamaica, are a fantastic live act with four critically acclaimed albums to their name.

They have toured the world on British Council sponsored tours - from Kazakhstan to Canada and Sri Lanka to Scandinavia.

Stroud's branch of Amnesty International have organised the gig, with the support of Stroud Town Council and a host of local sponsors. All proceeds from the event will go towards the work of Amnesty International.

"When I joined the Amnesty Group they were doing things like book sales," said event organiser Sam Giles.

"I wanted to help but I wasn't really interested in that sort of campaign. I wanted to do something that was a bit more fun and would be appreciated by a younger audience."

The gig takes place on Friday, January 10 at 8.30pm. Tickets are £8 (concessions £6) from the Stroud Subscription Rooms Box Office.

Stroud's Amnesty branch holds a monthly meeting at the Subscription Rooms on the second Wednesday of every month.
