A BURGER boss has scotched rumours that a Stroud fast food restaurant is to close down because it cannot keep up with the competition.
The temporary closure of Burger Star in Bedford Street had sparked rumours that the arrival of McDonald's had left no space for the long-standing takeaway. But boss David Field was quick to dispel such suggestions as nonsense.
"The place closed on Sunday for building work to be carried out," he said. "The work is due to start on Thursday and can't be done while the shop is open." New electrics, painting and decorating and a new sign are just some of planned changes.
The work is timed to coincide with the departure of franchise holder Nick Price. "Nick's franchise has come to an end and I will be run the store myself until such time as the new franchise holder takes over," said Mr Field.
He said the new McDonald's in Stroud had not harmed Burger Star. "There will be a McDonald's in every town but there is plenty of room for everyone," he said.
"If you can't stand the heat, you should stay out of the kitchen." He claimed the closure of London Road to two way traffic had done far more to harm trade in Stroud than a bit of competition would.
Mr Price's employees have all been given their marching orders following the closure. "I'm not buying Nick's business," said Mr Field. "They can re-apply for their jobs if they want to. "There will be adverts for staff in the window when we re-open."
