Greener travel with less hassle

AN ECO-FRIENDLY scheme designed to cut congestion and pollution was unveiled in Stroud at the weekend.

David Drew MP launched the Stroud Valleys Car Club which aims to provide members with the flexibility of owning a car without the hassle and cost of running their own vehicle.

The car club currently owns a small hatchback and a people carrier and members can book the vehicles as and when they need them.

The club has been set up by Gloucestershire sustainability group Vision 21 with funding from the Countryside Agency.

"It's intended to help with congestion and parking problems as well as the obvious environmental benefits," said Vision 21's Graham Stanley.

"This being Stroud we expect people with a slightly greener tinge will be the first to sign up but we're hoping interest will grow as more people hear about the club."

Membership costs £6 per month to cover insurance, tax, servicing, repairs and breakdown cover then the car can be booked for £1.80 and hour with a mileage charge of 15p per mile.

Cars can be booked for anything from an hour to a long weekend.
