Weighty problem for customer

A WOMAN who only wanted £20 of gravel has been left with a broken trailer and a bill for almost £100.

Mrs Annette McGlennon was so impressed by the extensive radio adverts of Moreton C, Cullimore Gravel Ltd that she travelled to its Whitminster depot from her home in Nailsworth for £20 of gravel for the base of her greenhouse.

Hooking up a trailer to her car Mrs McGlennon said she was prepared to make around half a dozen trips for the load.

But on her first visit she said her wooden, hand-made trailer was loaded up with half a ton of gravel despite specifically asking for only a quarter of a ton.

" I was concerned about the weight and I even had to pump up the trailer tyres but the staff assured me everything would be fine. They didn't even offer to take any of the gravel off for me," she said.

The following day Mrs McGlennon went back for more gravel and expressed her concerns about the previous load.

"I said I wanted half the amount of the day before but instead of that they put three-quarters of a ton.. I was really worried. I was meant to drive up Frocester Hill but I was too scared the trailer was overloaded so I went the long way around on the flat.

" When I arrived home my husband noticed the trailer had literally done the splits. It was broken."

Mrs McGlennon took the trailer to a garage and was left with a £97 bill for repair to the sub axles.

A furious Mrs McGlennon has written to the gravel company twice during last month but claims she has met with a negative response.

"They don't want to know and won't pay me any compensation. All I want is the £97." A spokesman for Cullimore said: "Customers are responsible for seeing their own vehicles when loaded are within safe limits.

"Vehicles are weighed in and out and if the customer believes their vehicles have too much on they can go and offload to what they believe is safe for their trailers. This is standard procedure."
