  • Bowlers stamp their authority

Cotswold District Cricket Association - Total Butler Saturday League, Division One Avening and Cherington v Adlestrop AFTER losing a close match the previous week at Adlestrop the Avening and Cherington side were determined to put up a better showing in the return fixture. This they did in emphatic fashion. Electing to bowl first Avening broke the century-making opening partnership of the previous week as early as the tenth over when Stewart Hudd caught M Barnes for 14 off the bowling of Ed Morris. Tim Sanderson was keeping things tight from one end and when the tiring Morris was replaced by Mark Wilkins the home crowd expected the Adlestrop batsmen to take on the wily Wilkins. However, it was he who struck in his first over removing dangerous opener H Walker for 14 thanks to an athletic catch from that man Hudd. Sanderson completed his ten overs for only nine runs and his replacement Pete Hudd maintained the stranglehold. K Barnes fell for ten runs as he became the second Wilkins victim, this time by way of an Ed Morris catch. Adlestrop were in trouble at 43 for three in the 21st over. The last seven wickets then fell for just 18 runs in nine overs, as the Adlestrop batsmen failed to cope with the accuracy of Wilkins (4-16) and Hudd (5-7), Hudd bowling a tremendous mixture of seam-up and leg spin. The Avening response was almost perfect as they reached 63 for the loss of Dave Thomas (21) who treated the crowd to a rare maximum over square leg. Bruce Whiting (18) and Stewart Hudd (12) were the not out batsmen as victory was secured in the 17th over with I Nurden the only wicket taker. read more
