Unlucky Painswick suffer rare defeat

Glos Premier Barton Hill 7 Painswick 3

PAINSWICK travelled to Bristol on Saturday and put in a very committed performance against Barton Hill and were unfortunate not to take the points in this Glos Premier clash.

Painswick started strongly and took an early lead thanks to a penalty from Ali Bressington.

Minutes later he had a chance to increase their lead but failed, hitting his kick just wide of the posts. Painswick's forwards held the upper hand in the set-scrums driving Barton Hill back.

The back-row of James Reed, Matt Coombs and Chris Hall were to the fore in the loose. Just before half-time Barton Hill scored a converted try from their number eight to give them a 7-3 lead at the interval.

With the conditions making the game a lottery in the second half, whoever scored first would most likely have sealed the game.

Painswick came close on a number of occasions with Aussie Smith and then Coombs being tackled just short of the tryline.

However, Barton Hill managed to hold out and claim the two points in a hard fought game.

This weekend Painswick continue their Glos Premier campaign with a home game against leaders North Bristol, kick-off 3pm, all spectators welcome.

Painswick have been drawn against Chipping Sodbury in the third round of the Powergen Vase at home on Saturday, November 6, kick-off 2.30pm at Broadham Fields.

Fixtures for Saturday (October 30): Painswick 1st XV v North Bristol (Glos Premier, home, meet 1pm, kick-off 3pm, shirts and ties); Painswick United XV v Chosen Hill (Merit Table, home, meet 1pm, kick-off 3pm, shirts and ties). Teams to be selected after training on Tuesday evening.
