Gold joy for ace Twinning

STROUD'S Geoff Twinning underlined his undoubted ability to capture gold at the Reading South East Region Modern Pentathlon.

Geoff, 24, was competing in his first pentathlon competition in two years.

At the end of the first day Geoff was lying in seventh spot, 200 points behind the leader.

On the following day he went from strength-to-strength and moved up to third after winning the shooting.

It got even better for Geoff. A fantastic cross-country run saw Geoff cross the tape third fastest. At this point, he was guaranteed a silver medal. The last discipline was the swim, which he swam with ease and won comfortably securing his place and the overall gold medal.

This was Geoff's first win since he took the title of British Junior Pentathlon Champion in 2001.

Geoff is now preparing for the British Open Modern Pentathlon next month, another good performance within the top three will enforce his determination for selection to the GB team.
