Protest against post office axe

PROTESTERS turned out in force on Saturday to show their displeasure at plans to axe post offices in the Five Valleys.

Some 70 people took part in the demonstration, which began with a queue outside Stroud's Russell Street post office and ended with a march through town to Tesco.

The demo, organised by Gloucestershire campaign group Post Office Counter Measures, was timed to coincide with the withdrawal of post office services at Samms convenience store in Rodborough's Bath Road.

It also aimed to highlight the possible closure of Whiteshill Post Office and Tesco's plans to remove the post office counter from the Paganhill One Stop shop when it converts the store into a Tesco Express.

The demonstration had cross-party support and there was speeches from members of all the major political parties at a rally outside the Tesco supermarket in Stratford Road.
