Radio winner sets example

A FAMILY with a heart of gold used a windfall to buy toys for disadvantaged children this Christmas and managed to more than double their money.

Paula Kruse, 35, from Hollow Lane, Stroud won £250 on Thursday after answering a brain teaser on Star 107.9 FM.

She and her husband David went shopping with the money at Stroud's Woolworths which was offering 10 per cent off goods that day as well as many promotional offers and they came away with £670 of gifts.

"I didn't really enter the competition for the money. I just wanted to win because the question was driving me nuts," said Paula a mature student studying psychology at the University of Gloucestershire."

"It was going round and round in my head and I couldn't concentrate on my essay." The mum of four said she had already bought Christmas presents for her own children, Alex 16, Jade 15, Danni 13 and Charlotte 9 so decided to donate the money to the SNJ/Star 107.9FM Toy Appeal

"My kids have everything they could possibly need," said Paula. "When I told them what we wanted to do with the money they thought it was a brilliant idea.

"We always try to do something for the Toy Appeal and for things like Comic Relief and Children In Need. "There are so many people worse off than us."

The family discovered that teenagers fared the worst in the annual toy appeal so they bought gifts for that age range such as board games and hair straighteners.

*The brain teaser question which won Paula the money was: A man cut a hole in his mattress - why?

Answer: He was an actor playing the part of a man with no legs - the hole was to hide his legs.
