AN eye-catching sculpture created by primary school pupils making faces is now on show in Gloucester Cathedral.
The pyramidal piece Face to Face will stay in the cathedral until Monday, December 13. Made by primary pupils from the Cotswold View Cluster of Schools, the inspiration for the work came from the seven schools visiting the cathedral in May to view Anthony Gormley's Field of the British Isles.
On returning to schools, pupils talked and wrote about the experience and the idea of a collaborative project was born. Working with local artist, Sam Mukumba, the children created myriad clay faces which combine together to form a striking pyramid.
The sculpture, towering over two metres, comprises over 500 faces celebrating the people of Stroud in their 700th anniversary. It originally appeared in Stroud's Museum in the Park during the summer.
Martin Fry, arts co-ordinator and head teacher of Horsley C of E School said: "It's amazing to think that the idea for this sculpture started in this great building and now in its completion stands proud under the historic arches as a real celebration of what children can achieve."
