Oh deer, the cop car is whistling

police patrol cars in the Five Valleys could soon be making sure they are 'herd' by fitting a gadget that will send wildlife running.

The deer whistles, designed to scare off animals, are set to be tested in rural areas in an effort to reduce the risk of accidents with animals.

As well as frightening deer it is hoped the high-pitched whistles, which are inaudible to the human ear and cost less than £5 each, might warn off cows and horses on Rodborough and Minchinhampton Commons.

"Collisions between motor vehicles and deer can result in serious injury or even death for the persons and animals involved," said police spokesman Matt Ford.

"The constabulary is aware of the problem and is seriously considering the possibility of fitting deer whistles on some of its patrol cars.

"There's evidence both for and against the effectiveness of the whistles so the fitting of such whistles will be on a trial basis.

"The whistles themselves are small plastic device that can be attached unobtrusively to a vehicle.

"When the vehicle is then driven at above 30mph the movement of the air through it is said to produce an ultrasonic sound that can be heard by deer within a certain range."

Mr Ford said the whistle was supposed to scare the animals off or at least make them pause long enough for the vehicle to pass.

"The whistles are inexpensive and will be fitted to patrol cars in rural areas if adopted."
