Farm rally steams ahead

IT was full steam ahead for the Home Farm Rally this weekend as traction engines and vintage vehicles sparkled in glorious spring sunshine.

Families and motoring enthusiasts flocked to Frocester Manor for the two day event to enjoy a host of events and see shining rows of classic machinery, cars and military vehicles.

Children had rides on tiny steam engines while older visitors marvelled at their massive, lovingly-restored counterparts.

Exhibitor Richard Willcox, 68, who owns seven vintage steam engines, proudly displayed a 117-year-old traction engine he found rusting in a scrap heap in the 1980s.

"I love everything about them," he said. "I had my first engine when I was 17 and I have had them ever since.

"They are indicative of a past way of life. You can see everything working and they are nicely painted and beautifully finished.

"We will never see the like of these again."

Enthusiasts were delighted with the machines on show. Classic car fans Ian and Shirley Green, from Dursley, explained their love of vintage vehicles.

"They have real character," said Mrs Green. "Not like modern cars."

"You get in an old car and there is that wonderful smell of oil and leather," added Mr Green. "It is Chanel no 5 to enthusiasts."

There was plenty for non-petrolheads too, with displays of weird and wonderful poultry, birds of prey and a remote-control car and boat area.

The rally is organised by volunteers to raise money for the Home Farm Trust, a charity that helps disabled adults and supports 33 residents in Frocester.

Last year it raised more than £3,000 for the charity - and other organisations, like the Severn Area Rescue Association, set up stands to benefit too.
