THE Britton-Carvalho Ensemble will be taking audiences at The Space in Stroud on a Brazilian odyssey this week with their unique blend of Anglo-Brazilian musical styles, ranging from the popular upbeat Frevo rhythms of North Eastern Brazil to the rural English settings of Vaughan Williams' On Wenlock Edge.
The Ensemble was formed in 2001 and has performed all over the U.K and South America at major festivals including the International Villa-Lobos Festival in Rio de Janeiro and the LACCS concert series at the Purcell Room in London. They also give regular TV and radio broadcasts.
Each performance is a journey on which the audience is guided through over 500 years of Anglo-Brazilian musical history, exploring the various different rhythms, melodies and techniques.
The Ensemble aim to give performances to audiences of all age ranges and musical preferences, therefore breaking the natural demographic for concert-goers within the U.K.
Within Brazil, the Ensemble often performs at state subsidised venues that offer free admission to the general public. Their long-term aim is to be able to achieve this within the U.K through corporate sponsorship and arts funding grants.
A Journey Through Brazil features a programme of works by composers including Villa-Lobos, Caetano Veloso and Tom Jobim. The concert is part of their latest UK tour promoting their award-winning CD, London Poem, released in November last year.
The Britton-Carvalho Ensemble appear at The Space on Wednesday, June 1 at 7.30pm
Tickets, at £8 or £6 concessions, are available from Riffs Music Shop.
