JOHN and Fiona Owen open their 15th Midsummer Celebration exhibition at the Old Chapel Studio, Marle Hill, Chalford this weekend.
The exhibition is an artistic record of their journeys through Andalucia, Crete, Puglia, Venice and Britain, including daily walks throughout the Cotswolds.
"Travel is an important part of the cycle of our year," said Fiona. "We gather sketches, photos and notes and take them back to the studio to work into paintings over the winter months."
Fiona paints in oil on panel and gilds her work in 24ct gold leaf, in the tradition of mediaeval manuscripts. Inspiration for her work is drawn from the landscape; the flora, fauna and changing seasons.
"I try to capture the genius loci - the unique spirit - of the place," she said.
"My work is very much informed by the mystic visionaries - painters like Samuel Palmer and writers like Richard Jefferies and Kathleen Raine."
Her painting has also been inspired by the Welsh poet Gillian Clarke, who bought some of John's first paintings whilst he was a student.
"I'm exploring the contrast between the soft, diffused light of a Cotswold winter and the dazzling Mediterranean coastal azures and verdigris in this exhibition," said John.
"The paintings are worked in oils and the surface of the painting is often scratched or sanded to achieve the desired feeling of space and air."
The exhibition runs from Saturday, June 4 to Sunday, June 19 and is open daily between 10am and 5pm.
Their garden is also open to the public as part of the National Garden Scheme. Entry is £3.
