Amnesty says: bar injustice

BEING locked in a cage in the town centre might not be everyone's idea of a good time.

But for campaigner Brian Oosthuysen it proved a hard-hitting way to raise awareness of injustices committed against refugees.

Brian - a local Amnesty International campaigner, spent an hour in captivity on Saturday to protest against the detention of asylum seekers.

It was part of a nationwide campaign which calls on the Government to reveal annual asylum detention figures.

While Brian watched the crowds from his cage, his wife Carole explained the importance of the stunt.

She added: "Depriving someone of their liberty should never be the first option, it should always be the very last.

"Seeking asylum is not a crime, it is a right."

This week saw other activities in Stroud which attempted to dispel myths about asylum seekers.
