Russell back at helm

DALE RUSSELL has sensationally returned to County League Taverners barely a year after quitting the Nailsworth side.

Russell takes over from player-manager Mark Llewellyn, who will continue in a playing capacity. Russell stunned the local football scene last May by standing down after an unprecedented 21 years of managing the Nailsworth side.During that time Russell guided Taverners from the depths of the Stroud League to the County League level they perform at today.

Back in May, 2004 Russell said: " I needed to unwind, but I have asked myself if I have done the right thing and I know it will be crunch time when the season starts but I imagine I will still be part of the club in some capacity."

Despite his brief sabbatical Russell remained on the committee and even managed the Reserve team at the tail end of last season.

Russell had been contemplating another football job away from Taverners and this prompted LIewellyn to tempt Russell back.

"Lewey (Mark LIewellyn) made the move to keep me," said Russell. "He had a bad season with injury and wanted time to recover and get his fitness back and felt he wanted to concentrate on that.

"I'm delighted to be back and look forward to ultimately guiding the side into the Hellenic League."

Mike Stratford will continue as assistant manager with Simon Ward becoming first team coach. Former Cheltenham Town keeper Ryan Gannaway will also assist with pre-season preparations.

Training will commence on Tuesday, July 5 at the KG5, Nailsworth and will start at 7pm every Tuesday and Thursday. All old and new players welcome to attend.
