Les Pugh

DETERMINED pensioner Les Pugh made a splash when he took part in a sponsored swim in aid of the World Cancer Research Fund.

Regular SNJ writer Les, 90, completed a remarkable sponsored swim at Stratford Park Leisure Centre on Monday.

Les, a former bowel cancer sufferer himself, overcame the illness in 2001 and has since made an annual donation to the charity.

Despite arthritis in his shoulders, Les completed four lengths of the pool using mainly backstroke, accompanied by his granddaughter, Limara

Davis, 20, and her friend, 17-year-old Stacey Phillips.

Limara's fiancee Bennett May watched the swim accompanied by Pete Wilson of BBC Radio Gloucestershire, the organiser of the event.

When asked why he wanted to do the swim, Les simply replied he wanted to help other cancer sufferers get through the disease.

The cash from his swim is still be counted.

Any future donations to the charity can be sent to the World Cancer Research Fund, Freepost, SR9 9AD
