Shortwood undone by penalty agony

TIM HADDOCK'S inspirational performance almost snatched an unlikely FA Cup Preliminary Round victory for Shortwood United.

The Shortwood captain grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck with a two-goal burst after the Nailsworth side found themselves two down at the break.

However, any thoughts of a replay were extinguished when James Darby conceded an injury time penalty for Bodmin's Craig Swiggs to send James Price the wrong way from the spot.

Earlier, United were out fought as Bodmin's Swiggs beat Price and Jon Embling to the ball to open the scoring on 27 minutes.

Former Plymouth striker Danny O'Hagan made it two moments before the break.

Damage limitation appeared the order of the day after the break, but United found another level.

Haddock and Chris Davis both went agonisingly close, and then James Singh saw his goal ruled out for offside.

Nonetheless, Haddock clawed his side back into the match with two goals in five minutes.

His first arrived on 65 minutes. A flowing move saw Embling arrow in a cross that was met by the head of Haddock.

Five minutes later and United found parity as Haddock rose majestically to nod in Dan Price's corner.

However, with almost the last kick of the match Swiggs broke United's resolve from the spot.
