Leigh Alliss claimed the best win of his career as the Stroud pugilist halted former British and Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion Neil Simpson at the end of the third round in Plymouth on Friday night.
Alliss, 30, who only became a professional boxer 24 months ago, shocked his more illustrious opponent with power and precision boxing that his flustered Coventry opponent was unable to counter.
Alliss, who took the fight at short notice said: "I'm over the moon. I took the fight at very short notice. He was bigger than me, but I caught him with some good body shorts and upper cuts."
Alliss' barrage took its toll on the 35-year-old, who before the bout was ranked fifth in Great Britain. He never recovered from a cut under the left eye and with Alliss targeting the wound, referee Richie Davies stepped in. The win should move Alliss into the top ten in Great Britain and enhance his chance of a national honour.
"My manager Chris Sanigar is even talking about a shot at the European title, but for now I will focus on my clash with Russian Vitali Musonov on October 7," he said.
