Scooter pest off the road

police in Stroud formed a motorcycle dismay team when they confiscated a nuisance scooter from a 15-year-old tearaway.

Officers impounded the yellow Peugeot Trekker after the youth - who had already been warned for his reckless riding - failed to give way at Hollow Lane on Friday, September 9.

Complaints of youths riding irresponsibly in parks and on estate roads have cropped up at a recent police consultation meeting in Cashes Green and at Cainscross Parish Council meetings.

Motorbike and scooter pests can have their noisy steeds confiscated under the Police Reform Act if they are caught riding irresponsibly.

And they have to pay a release fee of £105 to get it back - plus a further £12 for each day their bike is kept in storage.

PC Adam Crane, of the Stroud's community safety unit, said police had received several reports of unruly bikers in recent months.

"Examples include riding illegally on public footpaths and tracks and repeatedly riding up and down residential roads at high speed," he said.

"Riders who compromise the safety and quality of life of local residents, pedestrians and other road users could soon find themselves without transport - and with a hefty bill to settle before they get their bike back."

The public are being asked to support the clampdown by noting the number plates of nuisance vehicles, along with the time, date and location.
