We will remember them

STROUD residents - young and old - came together to remember those who gave their lives in past conflicts.

Traffic around the Subscription Rooms came to a standstill and members of the public fell silent at 11am on Friday to remember those killed in war. Some were moved to tears in the emotional service organised by the Royal British Legion.

Stroud District Council leader Chas Fellows, council chairman Sybil Bruce and Stroud town mayor Kevin Cranston turned out to pay their respects. Also among those in the crowd were Second World War Veteran Ivor Adams, 80, who fought in Normandy.

He said: "I was only 17 when I went to Normandy and I was really scared and didn't like what I was doing. "I come here every year to remember and will keep doing it for as long as I'm able to."

On Sunday, dozens of people - including Stroud MP David Drew - gathered at the cenotaph in Park Gardens to once again remember those affected by war.

Meanwhile, the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Stroud held a poignant service, which ended with a minutes' silence before a parade of ex-servicemen, nurses and members of the Girl Guides and Scouts.
