Echinacea myths

Andrew Hill of Stroud's Sunshine Health Shop dispels some of the myths of using Echineace for long periods and how we catch the common cold.

ONE of the most prevalent rumours I hear every day is that you shouldn't take Echinacea for more than a few weeks without a break - this is simply not true.

The fact is, Echinacea is at its most effective when taken long term. For maximum winter protection against colds and flu a daily dose throughout the whole season is best. The only people who shouldn't use Echinacea are those going through immunosuppressive therapy.

I recently read a theory that suggested that if you come into contact with the cold or flu virus you'll get it no matter what, this is obviously not the case. If this was true every single one of us would suffer colds and flu for the whole winter season.

A healthy immune system will not allow the virus to proliferate. Echinacea, Vitamin C, Zinc, Olive Leaf Extract are but a few examples of natural supplements which can help the immune system function at its best.

So that's put the record straight on two popular myths, what else can be done to help get through the cold season?

Many people get a bit down in the dumps when the cold, dark and damp mornings set in, suffering from SAD (Seasonal Affected Disorder) and the herb St Johns Wort can be very helpful in overcoming this. A positive frame of mind is one of the greatest immune boosters so don't let depression suppress your defences.

Cold hands, cold feet, chilblains etc. can be down to a poor peripheral circulatory system. These are the smaller veins which extend to the ends of the fingers, feet and head. Ginkgo Biloba is the herb of choice which can help immensely in helping this blood flow, often combined with Ginger to enhance the effect.

To keep joints supple and free of pain Arnica gel applied 3x daily is very helpful. A good fish oil high in Omega 3 (Not Cod Liver Oil as it contains too much Vitamin A and possible toxic substances form the cod's liver), Glucosamine sulphate and Devil's Claw taken daily will help repair wear and tear around joints and help inflammation and pain associated with arthritic conditions.

Since I started writing this regular column, so many more of you have been coming into the shop for advice on many conditions. But, to help those who can't come into the shop please write to the Stroud News & Journal (address and email) with your health related problems. This may help others with similar conditions. Your name and address won't be published so anonymity is assured.
