BEREAVED children from across the county were treated like movie stars at the official opening of the new cinema in Stroud on Saturday.
Around 200 children and their families, who have links with the Gloucester-based Winston's Wish charity, were invited to the Apollo Cinema in Merrywalks to watch the latest Harry Potter film - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
Former Dynasty actress Emma Samms, who lives in Stroud, officially opened the cinema by unveiling a plaque commemorating the occasion.
Emma, who is ambassador for Winston's Wish - a charity providing support for bereaved children - said: "I'm really very happy to be here today, for multiple reasons.
"Winston's Wish is a local charity that has now gone national and is the most wonderful charity. It provides such an amazing service for so many people in so many ways. To be able to treat the families that are in need of a treat is wonderful."
The actress, who is now starring in daytime soap Doctors, said she was also personally pleased about the new cinema, which is part of the £10 million redevelopment of Merrywalks, and added: "I will certainly be using it."
Stilt walking, children's entertainers and facing painting also kept the crowds busy at the event, which project manager for Apollo Cinema's Nick McKiernan dubbed a big success.
"It was fantastic and we've had some great feedback from the children and their families thanking us for the day," he said.
Apollo Cinema's also donated £1,000 to the charity. Mr McKiernan added: "We invited Winston's Wish because we wanted to support a local charity, it's very cared for in this area and we thought it would be a nice day for the children."
