JOURNALISTS are used to digging up dirt but SNJ reporters have been getting to grips with the real thing.
We have taken on our own allotment at Bisley Old Road in Stroud and over the follow months you can follow our progress as the fruits of our labour being to push through the soil.
We have enlisted the help of a gardening guardian angel in the form of environmentalist Roger Sanders - who after 18 years of hard graft has built up an organic smallholding in Stroud that makes him totally self-sufficient.
On Roger's advice we decided going organic was the way forward. But with little opportunity for planting at this time of year - except for a few broad beans, garlic and winter onion sets - we have ploughed most of our efforts into digging over the soil and adding nutrients in the form of well rotted horse manure.
Watch out for our regular column in the Green Scene.
