Russell takes on the bigger ball

FLYING tennis balls are now a familiar sight on the training ground at Forest Green Rovers with former England and Gloucestershire cricket legend Jack Russell passing on his methods to goalkeepers Ryan Clarke and Ryan Harrison.

The Stroud News and Journal acted as the inspiration behind the link up. Forest Green boss Gary Owers said: " We contacted Jack and he was more than happy to be involved. He has got an interest in the goalkeeping side.

"He is taking it very seriously and hopefully he can bring something to our goalkeepers - the lads like having him around."

Russell, a life-long Rovers fan, is the coach to current England gloveman Geraint Jones, but he is delighted to help out his favourite football team.

Russell said: "It's a new experience for me. I am learning a lot from Ryan and Mick Byrne the goal keeping coach.

" I'm honoured to have been on the bench the last couple of matches, thanks to Gary Owers' invitation."

Rovers' keeper Ryan Clarke feels Russell has made a massive difference.

He said: " It has been really good working with Jack, he has been absolutely top-class.

"His professionalism and preparation for games has helped myself and Ryan a great deal."

Russell, 42, played 54 Tests for England and represented Gloucestershire for 23 seasons before his retirement in 2004.
