Nick's England cup

MINCHINHAMPTON-based Nick Abendanon has put his injury nightmare behind him, and is now set to make his England Under-21 debut against Scotland at the Falkirk Stadium on Friday night.

The 19-year- old South African born full-back or winger, a former Beaudesert Park pupil, was part of an England Saint George's side which participated in the Dubai sevens last year, but ended up sustaining a fractured fibula whilst training.

Nick was delighted to receive his England call up.

He said: "I'm ecstatic, after a tough season this is a great reward.

"I'm not expecting to start the game but hope to get on as a replacement." Before his career threatening accident, Nick had made his mark with England in the 2005 Under-19 World Championships, ending up as England's joint top-try scorer.

Nick has only just returned to action, playing in a recent 64-17 hammering of London Irish in the Guinness 'A' league. He was in impressive form, scoring a hat-trick of tries as Bath cruised to victory.

Nick is unsure whether he will force his way into Brian Ashton's first team squad this season.

"I've spoken to Brian Ashton but to be honest I think I will be contesting for a place next season," he added Nick.

England coach Jim Mallinder, was delighted that Nick was back in the fold, he added: "Nick has always been in our long-term plans for this year's squad and we're delighted that he is back to full fitness and able to join us in time for this game."
