Alliss targets English title

VIDEO evidence could hold the key to Leigh Alliss' shot at the English Light Heavyweight title at Whitchurch Sports Centre in Bristol on Friday evening.

Alliss, the current Western Area Light Heavyweight Champion, has been studying video footage of Peter Haymer, who will be defending his title for a fourth time.

"I'm defintley the underdog," said Alliss.

"I watched a video from his fight against Steve Spartcus. He can certainly fight, he is over 6ft, but if I can work his body I feel I have a chance of taking his title."

Alliss has recently been training with Michael McGavin, who served in the British Special Forces for several years.

McGavin, who has recently started a local martial arts school in Nailsworth, offered Alliss a number of one- to - one sessions to help prepare him both mentally and physically for the forthcoming fight.

Alliss feels McGavin's help has taken him to a new level. He said: "I was extremely surprised by how hard I had to work. Mike has taken me to a different level as he has constantly pushed my physical and mental boundaries."

Victory over Haymer would put Alliss in the frame for a tilt at the European title and the opportunity for a full-time career in boxing.

Alliss added: "Boxing is an extremely hard business and one that I have had to make many sacrifices for.

"Trying to balance training and work is extremely difficult, and hopefully when I win this title I may be able to attract a sponsor and become a full- time professional."

Sky Sports will be covering the event, which will also feature Bristol's Lee Haskins, who will make his first defense of the Commonwealth Flyweight Title against South Africa's Zolile Mbityi. This event will be broadcast live on SKY Sports 1.

British & Commonwealth Middleweight Champion Scott Dann will feature in Chris Sanigar's promoted evening of eight fights.
